يحتوي الكتاب على الحكايات الشعبية في محافظة أسيوط، ولما كان مجتمع أسيوط مجتمعًا متعدد التكوينات الاجتماعية والثقافية وتختلف كثيرًا صور هذه المجتمعات ما بين شرق النيل وغربه، وشمال أسيوط وجنوبها، هذا التنوع الذي يتخذ أشكالًا اجتماعية وثقافية ولغوية، وجدت الباحثة نفسها مرتبطة ارتباطًا وثيقًا بمجتمع "أبنوب" لمعرفتها به معرفة جيدة، وقد اختارت الحكاية الشعبية في أبنوب موضوعًا لكتابها، ذلك لأن ابنوب تحتل مكانة متميزة بين مراكز محافظة أسيوط باعتبارها مركزًا يضرب بعمق في جذور التاريخ فثمة آثار فرعونية، تاريخية، دينية يحفل بها مركز أبنوب؛ حيث توافدت إليها جنسيات متعددة من عرب، أتراك، ومماليك مما يؤدي إلى تنوع الحكايات الشعبية في هذا الكتاب.
وتصنف الباحثة الحكايات الشعبية مثل حكايات الشطار والعيارين وحكايات الألغاز وحكايات الجن والملائكة وغيرها من الحكايات الشعبية، وتتحدث عن بناء الحكاية من حيث شكلها ومحاورها وتطور الأحداث، بالإضافة إلى الأسطورة من حيث الزمان والمكان والكائنات الأسطورية، وجماليات الحكاية وعناصر الإيقاع واللغة واللهجة في الحكاية.
