شعر البارودي حياته؛ فكل قصيدة في ديوانه صورة لحالة نفسية من حالات هذا الشاعر الملهم. والديوان في مجموعه صورة للعصر الذي عاش فيه، وللبيئة التي أحاطت به، وللنهضة المتوثبة في الحياة حوله، وللثورة التي تمخضت عنها تلك النهضة، وللنكسة التي أصابت النهضة والثورة كليتها، والتي نقلت الشاعر من وطنه إلى منفاه ليقيم به سبعة عشر عامًا وبعض عام، ويستأثر الشعر بها جميعًا. وقد اختار البارودي أثناء نفيه أجود ما قيل من الشعر في العصر العباسي، وقال أجود مما اختار، فبعث الشعر العربي خلقًا جديدًا. وشعر المنفي كشعر الشباب وشعر الكهولة صورة صادقة لهذه الحياة التي أراد لها القدر أن تكون نغمًا من الأنغام؛ تسمو بها النشوة إلى ذروة السرور والطرب حينًا، ويدفعها الطموح إلى مضطرب الثورة والمثل الأعلى حينًا آخر، ثم تصقلها السن ويصقلها النفي، فإذا الحكمة والحنين والحب تبعث إلى هذا النغم سكينة تسمو به على المألوف من ألحان الحياة؛ لا يغير من ذلك ما يدفعه النفي إلى نفس الشاعر من ألم تترجم عنه صيحات ثائرة تعيد أمام أذهاننا صورة من نزوات شبابه وثورة كهولته.
وحسب البارودي ديوانه آية لمجده وتراثًا للأجيال بعده. فهذا الديوان تمثال عبقرية خالدة، وهو باقي لذلك بقاء الأبد أيًا كان الشاعر الذي ينسب إليه. فما بالك وهو صورة صادقة لحياة صاحبه!. أو تستطيع الفنون مجتمعة أن تقيم تمثالًا يخلد من هذا الشاعر الملهم ما يخلده شعره النابض بالحياة وأنغامها، والذي بعث العربية خلقًا جديدًا؟
