يركز هذا الكتاب علي تاريخ الأفكار والمنظمات الماركسية في مصر في الفترة الأخيرة من الحكم الناصري، وحتي إغتيال السادات في 1981.
والواقع أن أفكار اليسار تمثل جزءاً من التراث الفكرى العربي المعاص؛ إذ بدأت تنتشر قادمة من أوروبا في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، وتمثل الماركسية بالتالي جزءاً من الجدل الثقافي والسياسي المصري منذ العشرينيات، كما اكتسبت الحركة الماركسية انتشاراً كبيراً تحديداً بين المثقفين والطلاب والعمال في الاربعينات، وشكلت أيضاً قوة مهمة منذ ثورة يوليو وما بعدها.
وقد قامت الناصرية بقمع الماركسية بشدة، حيث اعتبرتها قوة منافسة خطرة ثم حاولت بعد ذلك ضمها تحت لوائها عن طريق ضم المناضلين الماركسيين الأفراد باعتبارهم كوادر في الاتحاد الاشتراكي مقابل حل المنظمات الشيوعية، وحدث ذلك في 1965 ومن هذه النقطة تبدأ القصة الرئيسية لهذا الكتاب، الذي يتوقف أمام أهم الأحداث في تطور الأفكار والممارسات السياسية لليسار المصري، وأمام العلاقة المعقدة بين قوي اليسار والسلطة.
ومن هذا المنظور حلل الكتاب تأثير هزيمة 1967 وحركة الجماهير في عام 1968، وصعود السادات للسلطة والحركة الطلابية في السبعينيات و حرب أكتوبر عام 1973 والاختبارات الدراماتيكية، التي اتخذها السادات في السياسية الداخلية والخارجية حتي اغتياله في عام 1981.
ويميز المؤلف ما بين " يسار رسمي" ويسار راديكالي" واصفاً تاريخهما والعلاقة فيما بينهما، وبين السلطة، ويبرز أيدلوجياتهما ونجاحاتهما وخصوصا حدود كل منهما في محاولة لتفسير تهميش القوي الماركسية منذ بداية الثمانينيات.
