الآلاف الكثيرة من التقارير الواردة من جميع أنحاء العالم تفتح مجالًا واسعًا للنقاش حول حقيقة وجود الأشباح وماهيتهم. فظاهرة الأشباح هي أشهر ظواهر ما وراء الطبيعة أو البارانورمال فالنظرة التقليدية للأشباح هي أنها أرواح بشر ماتوا أو قتلوا ولسبب ما بقيت أرواحهم "عالقة بعالمنا المادي" بين الحياة الدنيا والعالم الآخر أو الحياة التانية أو البرزخ وغالبًا نتيجة لمأساة حادث أو صدمة بالحياة. وتنتشر هذه الظاهرة في عالم بأسره حتى بالدول العربية. ويعتقد بأن الأشباح مجرد حظور أرواح الموتى بشكل مرئي للأحياء واستنادًا على ما قاله أولئك الذين ادعوا أنهم قد شاهدوا أشباحًا فإنها تبدو شاحبة غير واضحة يمكن أن تعبر الأشياء الصلبة مثل الأبواب والجدران وتتخللها وهي تظهر وتختفي من دون أن تترك أي أثر. ولا يزال لغز وجود الأشباح غامض ومعقد.
