هذا الكتاب معنيّ بالإرهاصات المبكرة للحداثة والتحديث في الأدب والفن في بلادنا، فللحداثة تاريخ، وكان للشباب دور أصيل وبارز فيه.
فقد حملوا هم مشاعل التحديث، وكانوا هم رواده الأوائل، إذ لم تكن الثقافة التقليدية السائدة يومئذ لترضي طموحهم، وتشبع نهمهم إلى المعرفة، وتطلعهم إلى آفاق أدبية وفنية جديدة، فانفتحوا على حركة الأدب والفن في العالم، وفتحوا كوى يطلون منها عليها، ويتعرّفون على ما جدّ فيها من تيارات ومذاهب أدبية وفنية، ويحاولون نقلها إلى ثقافتنا الوطنية، ويصدرون مجلات تعنى بها وتعرّف بمفهوماتها، رغم قسوة الظروف الإقتصادية وتعسف السلطات الحاكمة.
ويحاول هذا الكتاب مسح المجلات التي ظهرت في تلك الحقبة العسيرة، والتعريف بالريادية منها، وإلقاء الضوء عليها، وعلى الدور الذي قامت به وتوثيقه، وتسجيل ما تناولته على صفحاتها، وتحديد المذاهب الأدبية والفنية التي عرفت بها.
وقد صدرت الطبعة الأولى منه عام 1995، ولكن نسخها نفدت في حينها، فرأت دار ميزوبوتاميا للطباعة والنشر أن ثمة ضرورة لإعادة طبعه لتلبي حاجة الجيل الجديد إلى التعرف على الإرهاصات المبكرة والتباشير الأولى لحركة تحديث الأدب والفن في بلادنا، إنسجاماً مع دورها المشهود له في خدمة ثقافتنا الوطنية وتوثيق مراحل تطورها، وربط حاضرها بماضيها.
