"جدتي، واين أجد قراً كهذا؟! فتجيبني أنه متنقل، هكذا قالت جدتي رحمها الله، إنه موجود بجوار السور ولكن يمكن للإنسان أن يجده في أي زقاق". كيف تستوعب عزيزة. حلم نجية، لقد وهبني الله امرأة جميلة ونشيطة، لكنه وهبني إياها كعقاب، كمن يضع السلم قدام كسيح ويقول له أصعد إلى قبة السماء، وهي لا تغدق بضحكاتها على عزوزي عبثاً، فأمانة واستقامة أخي هي فقط التي تقف حاجزاً أمام العار". وسكتت نجية فسألتها عزيزة بخيبة أمل: "أهذا كل شيء؟". فقالت نجية بلهجة تنم عن الختام: "هكذا قالت جدتي وراحت لحال سبيلها" رفعت ميخال فنجان الشاي الذي برد إلى شفتيها "إنها الحرب، الحرب القادمة بخطى حثيقة كعاصفة من نار، إنها ستحيل الأزقة إلى مقابر، فليحفظنا الله" وأعجبت فيكتوريا بأمها التي نطقت جملاً شديدة الجمال فأرغمت الحوش على الاستماع لها. كما شعرت فيكتوريا بالفخر بجدية أمها التي بدت وكأنها زارت الحوش جقاً. ونهضت ودفعت بالطفل إلى تويا ثم قدمت شاياً ثقيلاً لأنها ولعزيزة.
تدور أغلب وقائع هذه الرواية في حوش بغدادي في مطلع القرن العشرين، وهي أقرب إلى سيرة لحياة عائلية، تبدأ بالأجداد وتنتهي بالأحفاد بكل تفاصيل الحياة من ميلاد وموت ومرض وجنس وحب وجريمة وشهوة المال والجنون والأعراف والعادات والأساطير والمعتقدات والخرافات، في معالجة تندرج تحت ما يعرف بالرواية الطبيعية الواقعية، دون أن يمنعه ذلك من التدخل أحياناً بضمير المؤلف، ودون أن يمنعه ذلك من استعمال أسلوب التداعي أحياناً أخرى، معطياً الصدارة في الأحداث للعلاقة العاطفية بين فيكتوريا ورفائيل، متسماً في تلك المعالجة بالجرأة الشديدة.
