في كتابه هذا تتجه الدكتورة بسمة خليفة إلى فهم الصلة بين الأدب ونفسية منشئه وكاتبه، ولأن إبراهيم ناجي كان واحداً من أولئك الشعراء الرومانسيين الذين حظوا بمكانة بارزة في الشعر المصري المعاصر، انصب اهتمام المؤلفة على التعرّف على سيرته الذاتية وثيمة الألم في شعره، فهو الشاعر الذي خط لنفسه منهجاً معيناً ولوناً خاصاً عبّر فيه عن أهواء قلبه، فيما نظمه ونثره وقاله، وبالتالي كان الشاعر الذي عبّر عن ذاتيته بأسلوب راقٍ، فجمعت شخصيته بين الإنسان والطبيب والشاعر والمفكر في آن معاً.
تغرّد شاعرنا بألمه وحزنه، إلا أن الدواء – كما تقول المؤلفة – كان موجوداً في هذا الحزن، فمضى يردد الآهة تلو الآهة في نغمات موسيقية، شعرية، متناغمة، متأثراً بالعديد من شعراء الرومنسية، فجاء شعره صدى لأنات روحه، وتعبيراً عن شكوى نفس كئيبة، قلقة، لم تجد الراحة في هذا العالم.
وفي هذا الإطار حرصت المؤلفة على جلاء كثير من القضايا التي اختلفت فيها آراء الكتّاب والنقّاد الذين بحثوا في حياة الشاعر وشعره، كما كشفت النقاب عن قصة حبه الأولى التي تركت أكبر الأثر على نفسيته، وربطت ما بين نفسيته وشعره، معتمدة في دراسته من الناحية النفسية على مصادر أجنبية وعربية، مقالات وبحوث، تعليقات وقصائد وأقاصيص ومصادر أخرى.
