توزّع التراث العربي في جنبات الأرض بالفتوح، وتفرق في الدنيا بالحروب والغزوات، ثم تعاونت الأحداث والنكبات على النيل منه، ونحن لا نستطيع أن نفهم الأدب العربي اليوم إلا حين نجمع هذا التراث ونقرؤه، ونعيد النظر في الآراء الرائجة حوله، فإن أكثر النقد المعاصر لم يكتب إثر قراءة هذه النصوص، وإنما بني على أحكام ونظريات قديمة تداولها المعاصرون عن الأجداد من غير تعديل، كأنها نظريات بديهية لا تحوج إلى نقاش أو تعمق.
لذلك عمد المؤلف إلى دراسة العصر الحمداني، الذي له ميزاته وخصائصه، وهو شعر الشام، يختلف بها عن شعر الأمويين، ويختلف كذلك من شعر العباسيين، فالشعر الشامي يكاد يكون خاصاً بهذه المدرسة التي عاشت في القرن الرابع بأطراف الشام، تضم شاعر العرب "المتنبي"، وزميله أبا فراس الحمداني، والسريّ الرفّاء، والمصيصي، والسلامي، والنامي، والببغاء، والصنوبري، والوأواء، وكشاجم، والخالديين.
وهذه المدرسة الشامية تنافس أصحابها في رضا الشعر الرفيع، وإنتصار المعنى، وتجديد الفكرة، وابتعد أكثرهم عن التقليد، فأصبحت بضاعة الشعر لا تروج في هذا البلاط إلا إذا كان فيها الجديد من التصوير والتفكير، والتعبير.
وعليه، جمع المؤلف دواوين أبي بكر محمد وأبي عثمان سعيد في البلاط الحمداني، وذكر في كل ديوان منها الطريقة التي سلكها في التحقيق، ووصف المخطوطات التي رجع إليها، وتحدث عن الأساليب التي عالج بها أصالة هذا الشعر وصحة نسبته إلى الأخوين.
