لعبت غرترود بيل دوراً خطيراً فى الشرق الأوسط خلال الربع الأول من القرن العشرين. فقد كانت رحالة ومؤرخة ولغوية وآثارية وجغرافية وأدبية متمكنة، وقد وجدت فى الشرق الأوسط المكان الذى يمكن لها أن تستثمر مواهبها الخارقة فيه. فإنطلقت برحلات واسعة حول العالم فى زمن يندر فيه مشاهدة إمرأة رحالة تخترق البوادى والبرارى لتجمع المكتشفات الآثارية وتتعلم لغات شعوب بعيدة عن موطنها، وتحل ضيفة على السفراء والقناصل فى مختلف عواصم الدنيا. وقد أصبحت بإجماع الكثير الشخصية الإنكليزية الأكثر شهرة فى الشرق الأوسط خلال ذلك الزمن، حتى إكتسحت أسطورة لورنس العرب المريبة. إن قصة عملها فى الإستخبارات العسكرية خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى، غنية بأحداثها وشخصياتها التى ساهمت فى تحديد شكل وملامح القرن العشرين. وقد شاركت بعد الحرب بمؤتمر القاهرة ومؤتمر باريس ولعبت دوراً أساسياً فى خلق الشرق الأوسط القائم حالياً وفى تأسيس دولة العراق الحديث التى تحتضن أراضيها رفات غرترود، وتعتبر بصورة عامة أقوى إمرأة فى الإمبراطورية البريطانية حينذاك. وهذا الكتاب يقدم وصفاً حياً لسيرة حياة غرترود بيل ولأحداث ذلك الزمن فى العراق فى هذا الوقت.
