صاحب المعجم هو محمد بن مكرم بن علي وقيل رضوان بن أحمد بن أبي القاسم بن حبقة بن منظور الأنصاري الأفريقي المصري جمال الدين أبو الفضل صاحب لسان العرب في اللغة الذي نقلب صفحاته والذي جمع فيه ابن منظور بين التهذيب والمحكم والصحاح حواشيه والجمهرة والنهاية.
جمعه وعمّر وحدّث واختصر كثيراً من كتب الأدب المطولة كالأغاني والعقد والذخيرة ومفردات ابن البيطار، ونقل أن مختصراته خمسمائة مجلد، وكان صدراً رئيساً فاضلاً في الأدب مليح الإنشاء روى عنه السبكي والذهبي وقال تفرد بالعوالي وكان عارفاً بالنحو واللغة والتاريخ والكتابة، واختصر تاريخ دمشق في نحو ربعه، وكان عنده تشيع بلا رفض.
وبالعودة إلى المعجم فيرى القارئ بأن جمع ابن منظور في معجمه هذا للصحاح الجوهري، وللحاشية لابن بري، وللتهذيب الأزهري، وللمحكم ابن سيده، وللجمهرة ابن دريد، وللنهاية لابن الأثير، وغير ذلك. إن جمعه لهذه الكتب اللغوية في هذا المعجم يغني عن سائر كتب اللغة، إذ هي بجملتها لم تبلغ منها ما بلغه. فهو عجيب قفي نقوله وتهذيبه، وتنقيحه وترتيبه. وهو كتابه لغة، ونحو، وصرف، وفقه، وأدب، وهو شرح للحديث الشريف، وتفسير للقرآن. وقد رتبه المصنف ترتيب الصحاح في الأبواب والفصول (الترتيب الألفبائي للمعاجم) وقصد توشيحه بجليل الأخبار، وجميل الآثار، مضافاً إلى ما فيه من آيات القرآن الكريم، والكلام على معجزات الذكر الحكيم، ليكون على مدار الآيات والأخبار والآثار والأمثال والأشعار حله وعقده.
إلى جانب ذلك فقد صدّر معجمه بفصل جمع فيه تفسير الحروف المقطعة، التي وردت في أوائل سور القرآن العزيز، لأنها ينطق بها مفرقة غير مألوفة ولا منتظمة، فترد كل كلمة في بابها، فجعل لها باباً بمفردها وغايته بهذا التصدير التبرك بتفسير كلام الله تعالى الخاص به، وثانياً بأن هذه الحروف إذا كانت في أول الكتاب كانت أقرب إلى كل مطالع من أخره، لأن العادة أن يطالع أول الكتاب ليكشف منه ترتيبه وغرض مصنفه.
