سواء كان هذا العملُ الأدبيّ سيرة ذاتيّة لكوزنسكي أم رواية مُتخيّلة، فإنّه لا ينقطع عن ربط صلاته العميقة بكلا الأمرين. وسواء كان من تأليفه بإطلاق أم مستوحى في بعض مقاطعه من قصص شعبيّة بولونيّة، فإنّه يظلّ رائعة أدبيّة فريدة في ذاتها، نجمت من كوارث القرن العشرين التي ما تزالُ تمتدّ في تاريخيّة هذا القرن الذي نعيشهُ. الكلماتُ هنا تخرجُ من عين الكاميرا. يتوقّفُ الأسلوب عن كونه حذلقة وزخرفة ليضع القارئ في النّفَس الحيّ لتجارب إنسانيّة هائلة يعايشها طفل فتيّ، تمكّنه حياته الأولى بين مخالب الحرب العالميّة الثّانية من التّعرّض لصقيع الأيديولوجيّات القاتلة. ربّما ليس الألمُ الذي قاساهُ سوى أفكار باردة، تيبّست شيئا فشيئا. وتسنّنت أطرافها، لتتحوّل إلى السّكّين التي تذبحُ طائرا فقط لأنّ يدا لوّنتهُ من الخارج. وجعلتهُ يبدو مختلفا عن شقيقه الآخر، في عالم جعلهُ الإنسانُ المعاصر غير جدير بالنّظر إليه. ولهذا يطلق طفل الرّواية صرخته تلك: "لقد حيّرني الألمانُ. يا للخسارة. هل عالمٌ مفلسٌ وقاسٍ كهذا العالم، جدير بأن يحكم؟"
