أنها قصة تدور فيما يشبه الميثولوجيا غير التاريخية بعيدا عن عدم اليقين لعلماء الآثار فى فترة تاريخية غير واضحة تماما للمؤرخين من تاريخ ما قبل الإمبراطورية الرومانية. وتعتمد أورسولا فى الرواية على ملحمة "الإنيادة" التى خصص فيها الشاعر الرومانى فرجيل، أبرز أبياته لزوجة "إينياس" الثانية "لافينيا"، ويركز عليها كنبوءة، ففى اليوم السابق لنزول "إينياس" إلى لاتينيوم تمسك نيران غامضة بشعر "لافينيا" ابنه الملك "لاتينوس" والملكة "أماتا " فى عصر ما قبل الرومان وتفقد "أماتا" طفليها الولدين الصغيرين بعد مرضهما، وتصاب بالجنون وتصر على زواج "لافينيا" من ابن أختها "تورنوس" ولى عهد روتاليا المملكة المجاورة، ولكن "لا فينيا" تتردد وتتبع كلمات النبوءة، ويعلن لاتينوس إنها سوف تتزوج من "إينياس" الغريب القادم من طرواده لتبدأ الحرب الأهلية ويكون مقدرًا لبطل "فيرجيل" تأسيس إمبراطورية رومانية جديدة.
