كثيرا ما كانت مسألة الثقافة محل جذب وإغراء للكتاب والقراء على حد سواء ، وذلك بما تضمه موضوعاتها من خصوبة وثراء ، وبما تتميز به من تشابك وتعقيد ، لذلك كان الهدف دائما بالنسبة للخائضين في مسألة الثقافة هو محاولة تفكيك هذا التشابك وحل التعقيد الملازم لها ، رغم أن هذا التفكيك غير متاح دائما لأن الكاتب والباحث نفسه قد يزيد من تعقيد المسألة التي يخوض فيها بطرحه لأفكار إشكالية تحتاج بدورها إلى نقاش بغية إقرارها أو رفضها وتجاوزها .وترجع صعوبة تناول الثقافة كموضوع أو تناول موضوع من موضوعاتها إلى اتصالها الوثيق بالأخلاق والقيم والمعايير التي لا تكاد تنفصل عن ذات الإنسان وإن أراد فصلها ، ولهذا كان أهم نقاط الجدل في العلوم الاجتماعية وفي علم الاجتماع على وجه الخصوص هو حضور الذات أو غيابها بما تضمه من مضامين أخلاقية ورمزية فكانت المدرسة الوضعية باعتبارها حاضنة علم الاجتماع في مهده قاسية جدا مع الذات حيث عملت ما أمكن لها ذلك على إبعادها وتحييدها ، لا لشيء إلا محاولة منها لإبعاد الإيديولوجيا وسد الباب أمام كل تعصب وتشيع من شأنه التأثير على ما سمي بالموضوعية العلمية خلال عملية البحث ، غير أن هذه الذات حاضرة سواء أرضي الباحث بذلك أو لم يرض ، ذلك ما حاولت بعض المدارس الأخرى التي أعقبت المدرسة الوضعية وبخاصة في صورة المدرسة النقدية ( المدرسة الألمانية) الاستثمار فيه حيث رأت في حضور الذات أساسا للفهم وفي مضامين هذه الذات أدوات أساسية لتفكيك موضوعات الدراسة
