يعد "يوسف"، صاحب هذا التاريخ، من أشهر الشخصيات اليهودية، فقد كان قائداً عسكرياً في التمرد الكبير ضد روما، ولما هُزم حاول الاستسلام فرفض جنوده، ثم أجبروه على الانخراط في انتحار جماعي، فوافق ورتب طريقة ليقتلوا بعضهم بحيث بقي هو الأخير، فانضم للرومان وعاش بقية حياته في روما متفرغاً للتأليف، وغدا من أهم مبدعي الأدب اليهودي، فهو سليل الكهنة حاملي الثقافة اليهودية، كما أنه شاهد عيان للأحداث ومطّلع على الوثائق الرسمية، اضافة لإجادته الآراميّة لغة الثقافة في الشرق، وامتلاكه أسلوب تعبير جميل. ولكتابات يوسف مكانة هامّة ضمن الأدب العالمي، فهي المصدر الأساس للمعلومات عن فلسطين في زمن الهيكل الثاني، وهي مهمة لليهود لأنها تشكل الوجه التاريخيّ لروايات الكتاب المقدّس. كما هي مهمة للمسيحيين، لاحتوائها على الذكر الوحيد للمسيح خارج الأناجيل، حتى أن بعض الكنائس تعد تاريخه هذا واحداً من أسفار العهد القديم. كما قام كثير من المؤرخين المسلمين باستقاء المعلومات منه لتغطية أحداث ما قبل الإسلام.
