يحتل موضوع الدور الإقليمي لتركيا في الإستراتيجية الأمريكية منذ وصول حزب العدالة والتنمية إلى السلطة في عام 2002م أهمية كبيرة ليس لأهمية هذه العلاقة فقط، إذ تمثل الأولى (تركيا) بموقعها الإستراتيجي وثقلها البشري والثقافي والحضاري في المحيط العربي والإسلامي، وتمثل الأخرى (الولايات المتحدة) القوة العظمى في العالم والمتفردة بالقرار الدولي الذي جعل دولاً عظمى – كروسيا والصين ودول أوروبية أخرى تخطب ودها وتجعل قضية تحسين علاقاتها بها من أولوياتها متجاوزة في الغالب خلافاتها االعقائدية وحتى الإستراتيجية أحياناً.
وعلى الأعم فإنه لدى الحديث عن الدور الإقليمي، يتبادر إلى الذهن دائماً أن ثمة إنساقاً من التفاعل، تتخذ قدراً من الثبات والإستمرارية بين مجموعة من الدول التي تتوافر أهداف ومنطلقات وطموحات إزاء ذلك المجال وإن ثمة توازنات للقوى داخل ذلك الإقليم يتم بموجبها تحديد الأطراف أو الدول الأكثر فاعلية وهذا الكلام ينطبق على النطاق الإقليمي لتركيا ودوائر حركتها المتمثلة (أسيا الوسطى وأوروبا والشرق الأوسط) إذ أنها ما زالت تؤلف مناطق مليئة بالتفاعلات والتحديات التي ما انفكت القوى الخارجية – الدولية – تسعى للتأثير فيها، ومن ثم كان ولا يزال هذا المجال الحيوي متمثلاً بهذه الأقاليم يؤلف عاملاً هاماً من عوامل تحريك السياسة الدولية، فالمنطقة شهدت وما زالت تشهد تفاعلات من دول تسعى للقيام بدور فاعل ومؤثر في تحديد موازين القوى فيها، وهذا التفاعل يدور في إطار حالة من التنافس المستمر بين القوى الفاعلة من أجل الحصول على موقع الريادة والقيادة للمنطقة، وإن هذا التنافس في حالة من التحفيز المستمر بفعل ظاهرة الحراك الإقليمي والدولي وإلى جانب طموحات القوى الإقلميية لنيل ذلك الموقع القيادي يقف التنافس الدولي لضمان المصالح الكامنة في هذه المطقة من العالم وبذلك فإن عملية التنافس تنطوي على قدر من الإستمرارية
