لاقي هذا الكتاب نجاحاً كبيراً عند صدوره كما كان له عظيم الأثر علي أوساط المثقفين في المجتمع الإنجليزي. وقد أعيد طبعه سبعون مرة كما ترجم إلي أكثر من عشرين لغة، كذلك تم طبعه بطريقة برايل حتي يتمكن من قراءته مكفوفو البصر.
هذا السفر العظيم قام بترجمته إلي اللغة العربية الأستاذ أحمد فهمي أبو الخير في بداية أربعينات القرن العشرين. فقد كان رحمه الله أحد رواد الحركة الروحية في مصر، ونظراً لنفاذ هذه الترجمة من المكتبات بمرور السنين، فقد وجدت من واجبي أن استدعي جهود الأستاذ فهمي أبو الخير إلي الحياة بأن أعيد ترجمة هذا السفر العظيم وتقديمه ثانياً إلي القارئ العربي بصورة لائقة، وذلك لأهمية هذا الكتاب لما يحتويه من معلومات مهمة عن العالم الروحي مع التفسير العلمي لاستمرار الحياة بعد الموت.
ويقول فندلاي في مقدمة كتابه، لابد أن نفهم بوضوح أن العالم الأثيري هو جزء من هذا العالم، هذا الذي حولنا جميعاً. إنه مادة رقيقة جداً كي تدركها حواسنا. وأننا هنا والآن كيانات أثيرية يغلفها جسم مادي، وأن الموت يعنى فقط انفصال هذا الجسم الأثيري عن الغطاء المادي. الجسم الأثيري هو الجسم الحقيقي والدائم، وهو نسخة طبق الأصل من جسمه المادي. عندما ندرك هذا فإنه من السهل أن نفهم كيف أنه تحت شروط معينة لا نفهمها بالكامل حتي الآن يمكنه أن يغلف نفسه ثانياً بمادة جسدية ويتصرف بطريقة مماثلة لأنفسنا تحت سيطرة العقل. ومادام يسود الفكر أن روح الإنسان هي شئ من الطبيعة، هي قبضة من الريح أو سحابة ناعمة ليس لها شكل أو مادة، سيظل الشك باقياً بين هؤلاء الذين يعتقدون أن كل شئ هو ما يمكن رؤيته وسماعه وأنه لا يوجد شئ خارج نطاق العالم المادي.
