يدرس هذا الكتاب التعريفات البلاغية العربية، وقد تحرّى فيها وعي البلاغيين بطرق إيرادها، وذل بِحَصْر هذا الوعي، إستناداً إلى فرضية كيِّسة، في مذهبين اثنين متقابلين: مذهب التعريف في ضوء الممارسة العلمية العربية الأصيلة، ومذهب التعريف في ضوء الممارسة العلمية العربية المتأثرة بالمنقول اليوناني؛ فلزمه على وفق ذلك أن يفحص عن بنيات هذه التعريفات، حتى إذا اطْلع منها على حقائقها، بما يوافق حيثيته في إستقرائها، تأكدت عنده تلك الفُرقة المنهجية التي حَدَسَها في الممارسة التعريفية العربية؛ وسعى بعد ذلك في إثْر الوظيفة التعريفية، متوصلاً إلى الكشف عن أنواعها وإلى تقدير حدودها داخل البلاغة العربية، وقد استندت أبحاث هذا الكتاب في التعريف البلاغي إلى منهجية التقويم التكاملي، وهي خطة حَذَقَ طه عبد الرحمن رسْمَها من أجل تقويم آليات العلم المنتجة، فناسبتْ لذلك موضوعه مناسبة شافعة، لكون التعريف من أهم تلك الآليات الإنتاجية.
