هدفنا فى هذا الكتاب هو أن نبين بوضوح كيف أن الإسلام كدين سماوى كان أول الأديان التى تحض على طلب العلم والعرفة، وعلى التفكير فى ظوافر الخلق وفى عجائب الكون.
وعلى ضوء ما سبق فإننا يجب أن نرسم أسلوب البحث فى هذا المؤلف بحيث نلقى الضوء فيه على معنى العلم بصفة عامة، ثم نتطرق إلى معنى العلم كما ورد فى القرآن وعند علماء الإسلام، وننتقل إلى التعرف على منهج العلم الإسلامي الذى استفاد منه الغرب فيما بعد، ولكى نؤكد هذا فإننا سنعطى صورة متطورة لمناهج العلوم فى الغرب، ونعقد مقارنة بينها وبين خصائص العلم والمنهج عند المسلمين موضحين كيف أن المنهج فى العلوم الإنسانية عند الغرب قد تأدى بهم إلى أزمة كنتيجة لقصوره عن فهم حقيقة الإنسان الذى يرتبط فيه الجسد مع النفس، بينما يؤمن علماء المسلمين بهذا الوضع الذى ينبثق عن صنع الخالق للإنسان وإخراجه على هذه الصورة التى يتحد فيها العنصران أى عنصر النفس وعنصر الجسد معا.
وهكذا نجد أن محصله بحثنا فى هذا الكتاب ستؤدى بنا إلى إظهار مدى شمولية المعرفة فى الإسلام، مقارنة بجزئية المعرفة فى العلم الغربي المعاصر، وأن نبين أسباب هذا التعارض بين العلم الإسلامي والعلم الغربي.
