لقد كان من أوليات أختيار هذا الموضوع أن كثيراً من أخلاقيات أمتنا العربية بسيت أو تنوسيت في زحمة المادية المقيتة التي طبعت عليها سلوكيات البشر. ويأمل الكتاب أن يكون تذكيراً للضمير العربي وأخلاقيات الأمة العريقة بفعال هؤلاء الجدود من أجواد العرب.. وفي مقدمتهن ذلك الذي ملأت شهرته الآفاق وما ذكر إلا قيل: إن أجواد العرب ثلاثة أشهرهم "حاتم الطائي".
وأما: "عمدة الصعاليك عروة بن الورد" فتمثلت في تكرماته وجوده ظروف اجتماعية وسلوكيات طبعية، وما عرف من أغنياء أشحاء لا يدفعون فائض أموالهم إلى الفقراء الذين يفترشون الأرض ويلتحفون السماء، وتطلعت نفسه إلى إقامة لون من العدل والتكافل الاجتماعي والتوازن الطبقي بين الأغنياء الأشحاء والفقراء المعوزين.
وأحد الدواعي لبحث هذه الصفة الأخلاقية وهي "الكرم" لون من تذكير ناشئة الأمة بما كان عليه جدودهم الأكارم من سلوكيات وأخلاقيات نحن في أمس الحاجة إليها.. ولعل في ذلك ربط بين ماضي الجدود العريق وحاضر هذه الأمة الزاهر.. إن شاء الله تعالى.
وفارسا الموضوع "حاتم وعروة" متمردان.. أما حاتم فتمرد على الخل والشح والتقتير.. قصد البذل والعطاء والجود حتى صار شيخ أجواد أهل الجاهلية. وأبو الصعاليك "عروة" تمرد على الفقر والأغنياء الأشحاء.. قصد إطعام المعوزين والفقراء.. فكرم عروة لسد حاجة المحتاجين والتمرد على الغبن الاجتماعي وتحقيق السعادة للمحتاجين.
وإن اتفقت الوجهة بينهما في دافعية الكره والبر وسد حاجة المحتاجين.. فلقد اختلفت الوسيلة ومع عروة كانت الإغارة والسطو وسلب أموال الأغنياء الأشحاء ودفعها إلى الفقراء والمعوزين وسد حاجة أهل العوز والمسبغة.. ومع حاتم.. فمحاولة إسعاد الأضياق وتقديم ألوان العون والمساعدة لمن عرف ولمن لم يعرف ترسيخاً لسلوكيات وأخلاقيات البيئة العربية ومنها الكرم والعطاء والجود.
