تكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب في محاولته كشف الحقائق من مصادرها، وإماطة اللثام عن أسرار كان يراد لها أن تندثر، في قضية شغلت المجتمع العراقي لفترة طويلة، ودخلت ضمن تفاصيل أحداث التاريخ العراقي الحديث، وهي قضية "جند السماء" أو ما تسمى بواقعة (الزركة).
و"حركة جند السماء" تنظيم يعتمد الدين كقاعدة في النظرية والعمل، والاسم نسبة إلى كتاب أصدره "ضياء الكرعاوي" بعنوان (قاضي السماء)، وما لم يتم الكشف عنه تفصيلاً هو كيفية نشوء هذه الحركة، وتفاصيل شخصية قائدها، ووسائل كسب الأتباع، وطرق تمددها على الأرض، ومصادر تسليحها وإمكانياتها المادية، وعلاقاتها السياسية والدينية، ومدى تطابقها مع التفاصيل التي تم طرحها في الإعلام أو تم تناولها بين الناس.
التفاصيل التي تضمنها الكتاب تعتمد على البيانات والدلائل والوثائق المعززة باعترافات من بقي حيًّا من أعضاء التنظيم، وثبات هؤلاء الأعضاء في القتال والتصدي لمواجهة القوات العسكرية المسلحة، وعن تفاصيل قضية الاعتقاد بحقيقة قدرات زعيم التنظيم، والإيمان العميق بما تمليه العلاقة الروحية والنفسية بين الشخص وبين القائد أو الزعيم، وصولاً إلى الإيمان المطلق بقضية جند السماء، واعترافات من وقع أسيرًا في المعركة.
اعتمد المؤلف على التحليل والاستنتاج في معالجة القصص واستخلاص القرائن، في محاولة لإلقاء الضوء على حقائق التنظيم والحركة المسلحة لجند السماء خدمة للحقيقة، واعتمادًا على الأدلة والقرائن والثوابت التي تم استخراجها من القضية التحقيقية.
