جاء في العديد من المصادر المعتمدة أن مدينة كربلاء كان لها موقع مهم في القدم بسبب سكن العديد من السلالات القديمة التي سكنت فيها قبل وبعد الإسلام لأنها كانت ممراً للقوافل التجارية التي كانت تأتي من الشرق والغرب كبلاد الشام وإيران والهند والصين إضافة إلى بلدان الجزيرة العربية الأمر الذي ساهم ببروز إسمها عبر التأريخ حيث أصبحت مدينة مترامية الأطراف كما أن خصوبة أرضها بسبب مرور نهر الفرات القديم في أراضيها جعل منها مقراً لكثير من الجماعات والسلالات والقبائل التي حكمت المناطق القريبة منها، كالبابليون والمناذرة وغيرهم من الأقوام حيث خضعت لسلطة هؤلاء. وما الآثار الباقية إلى يومنا هذا إلا دليل حي على ازدهارها وتطورها في العديد من الأزمنة والعصور.
