يعتبر علم التفسير من أوفر علوم القرآن الكريم حظاً من حيث التصنيف والتأليف، حيث نال العناية والإهتمام على مر العصور والقرون المتعاقبة من لدن عصر النبوة حتى عصرنا الحاضر، وكل من له صلة يكتب التفسير يعرف أنها متعددة المشارب، متنوعة الأذواق حسب إختلاف ثقافات المفسرين أنفسهم، فمن معتن بدراسة غريبة أو نحوه، أو بلاغته، أو إعرابه ومن مفسر له على طريقة الفقهاء والمجتهدين، أو على طريقة المتكلمين والمنطقيين، أو على طريقة العِلْمِيّين الذين أوردوا كثيراً من المصطلحات العلمية كتفسير لآيات من القرآن الكريم.
وعليه في هذه المشارب المتعددة، والأذواق المتنوعة، جعلت من كتب التفسير في مجموعها موسوعات علمية في مختلف الفنون والعلوم، ولأجل ذلك فإن القارئ فيها قد يقف مراراً عند كثير من مصطلحات هذه العلوم يريد معرفتها، ليفهم كلام المفسرين الذين أدرجوها في تفاسيرهم، ولما كانت هذه المصطلحات هي لعلوم كثيرة، الأمر الذي يتطلب من الباحث أو الدارس أن يجعل أمامه مائدة متنوعة من كتب هذه العلوم، ليفهم من خلالها المراد بمصطلحاتها الواردة في كتب التفسير.
من هنا، قام المؤلف جمع هذه المصطلحات والتعريف بها تعريفاً ميسراً يعين القارئ والدارس والباحث - على حد سواء - على فهمها فكانت من هذه الجهة مفتاحاً أمام الدارسين والباحثين يفتح لهم ما عساه أن يكون مغلقاً من كلام المفسرين، ثم إن هذه المصطلحات أيضاً هي مفاتيح لمن يقرؤها إبتداءً حيث تفتح له آفاقاً واسعة لدراسة كتاب الله تعالى من زوايا متعددة.
"مفاتيح التفسير" معجم شامل لما يهمّ المفسر معلافته من أصول التفسير وقواعده ومصطلحاته ومهماته.
