الكتاب أيضًا شهادة مهمة من شخصية، كانت في مركز صنع القرار في مرحلة حرجة من تاريخ إيران الحديث، بشأن كثير من القضايا الإشكالية التي لا يزال الجدل قائمًا بشأنها إلى اليوم. في هذا الكتاب يُقدم آية الله منتظري رواية ناقدة لمنعطفات تاريخية مهمة في عمر الجمهورية الإسلامية، منها ما يرتبط بأحداث داخلية وأخرى تتعلق بالسياسة الخارجية.
من أهم ما يتضمّنه هذا الكتاب هو رواية آية الله منتظري ملابسات زيارة المبعوث الأميركي «ماكفارلين» إيران وبيع الأسلحة وقضية الرهائن، والإعدامات التي شهدتها إيران، ونشأة الحرس الثوري وحل وحدة حركات التحرر التابعة له، ومراجعة موقفه من ولاية الفقيه المطلقة وطرحه نظرية الانتخاب، وكذلك موقفه من اقتحام السفارة الأميركية وعلاقة إيران بالولايات المتحدة الأميركية، ومجريات الحرب العراقية - الإيرانية والموقف من استمرارها، ويفصل في موقفه من شخصية علي خامنئي وكيفية توليه عددًا من المناصب، ويشرح أسباب الخلاف معه ومعارضته تولّيه منصب قيادة الثورة خلفًا لروح الله الخميني.
