كانت علاقة سبينوزا بالمؤسسة الدينية علاقة مريبة، فبعد أن تبحّر في اللغة العبرية، وأصول اليهودية، وأعدّ نفسه للتقاليد الحاخامية، طُرد من الكنيس اليهودي؛ لأنه انتقد العقائد الدينيّة والكتب المقدّسة، لكن نقده لم يكن موجّهاً ضدّ الشعور الدّيني والورع والتقوى الحقيقيين، بقدر ما كان يقصد به المؤسّسة الدّينية.
كان سبينوزا يحمّل ثلاثة أشخاص مصائب البشرية كلّها؛ فالأول ذلك الذي يرضى بوضعه البائس ويبقى أسير إنفعالاته الحزينة، ويلقّبه بــ العبد؛ والآخر من ينتحب ويتأسّى بسبب عواطف العبد الحزينة، وهو الكاهن؛ والثالث من يسعد ويفرح لضعف الإنسان وهونه وعجزه، ويغتنم الفرصة للسّطو على الأجسام والنّفوس، وبسط نفوذه على مجتمع العبيد، وهو الطاغية.
ويرى سبينوزا أن دواء هذه الحالات يكون بمحاربة الفكر الخرافي والقضاء عليه، ومنع رجال الدّين من إعادة نشره وتأجيجه، والفصل بين الدّين والدولة حتّى لا يطغى صاحب السلطة، ويتذرّع بالدّين، أو يطغى رجل الدّين، ويحتمي بالدولة.
إنّ سبينوزا لا ينكر الدّور الذي يؤديه الدّين الحقّ في بناء هويّة الجماعة سياسياً ودينياً، فالعقل والدّين يسعيان إلى الهدف نفسه؛ المتمثل في تنظيم حياة النّاس، لكن هناك حدوداً للعقل وحدوداً للدّين، وهي حدود موضوعية، حيث توجد صعوبة في العمل بتعاليمهما ومبادئهما، صعوبة عمليّة يشهد بها التاريخ وتقرّها التجربة، فما الحلّ إذاً؟ وعلام يقوم تصوّر سبينوزا لنظام الحياة في الدين والمجتمع ونظام الحكم في الدولة؟...
