يعرض الكاتب في صفحات هذا الكتاب كتاباً طبيّاً مختصرا مغنياً في معرفة الأمراض وأسبابها وعلاماتها ومداواتها، لاضطرار الناس إلى وجود الصحة واعتمادهم طلبتها، فلذلك قالت الحكما: إن المطالب المستفادة نوعان (خير ولذة وهذا الشيئان لا يتم للإنسان الوصول إليهما إلا بالصحة، لأن اللذة المستفادة من هذه الدنيا، والخير المرجو الآخرة لا يصل الواصل إليهما إلا بالصحة، وصحة البدن إنما تتم بالصناعة الطبية، ولهذا السبب صارت أشرف الصنائع قدرا وأجلّها خطرا، لأنها حافظة للصحة الموجودة ورادة للصحة المفقودة. إلا أن الطريق المؤدي إلى علمها لما كان طويلا شديدا عظيما والشاهد، بذلك بقراط الحكيم، فإنه قال: "العمر قصير والصناعة طويلة والوقت ضيق والتجربة خطر والقضا عسر.
فلصعوبة هذه الأمور وطولها صار ميل المحدثين إلى النظر في الكتب المختصرة التي تتضمن ذكر الدّاء وصفة الدواء على سبيل الإيجاز والإختصار. فلهذا السبب جعل الكاتب فيما ذكره في هذا الكتاب من علم الأمراض وأسبابها وأعراضها ومداواتها طريقا متوسطا مغنيا في الأسفار عن استصحاب الكتب الكبار الكثيرة، متجنباً فيه التطويل لإضجاره ومطرحاً إفراط الإختصار لغموضه. وقدّم ذكر الأمراض على الأسباب الفاعلة لها لظهورها، وجعل ابتداء الكلام في الأمراض الحادثة الظاهرة والباطنة، وأردف ذلك بذكر بقية أمراض الأعضاء على نسق وتحقيق.
