لم يعد بإمكان الأديان أن تقف بعيدًا عن الصراعات التي يعيشها العالم المعاصر لذلك تدخل الدين في قضايا السياسة والاقتصاد والثقافة حسب رؤيته للعالم أو للإنسان والمجتمع وهذه هي الأيديولوجيا بمعناها العام والبسيط. لذلك وجود الدين على هذا المستوى يجعله أيديولوجيا بقدر أو آخر. ورغم أن الكثيرين يدرجونه حسب هذا المعنى ضمن الوعي الزائف، إلا أننا لا نتوقف عند صحة أو زيف الأيديولوجيا/ الوعي بل نقيم الأيديولوجيا بمقدار الهيمنة أي قدرتها على ربط أفراد طبقات اجتماعية معينة وفرضها لآراء محددة عن كيفية تنظيم المجتمع وضمان رضا الجماعات الأخرى المسيطر عليها بوسائط ضبط اجتماعي وثقافي وسياسي عديدة. فالدين في هذا السياق أيديولوجيا بمعنى أنه نسق أو أنساق من المعتقدات التي تلجأ إليها الجماعات الاجتماعية والتجمعات سواء أكانت أفكارًا وهمية أم صادقة.
وهذه الدراسة دعوة للتفكير والاستفادة من تجارب إنسانية أخرى ذات تاريخ وواقع يلتقي في بعض جوانبه مع متجمعاتنا العربية- الإسلامية، خاصة فيما يتعلق بالتخلف والتبعية والتنمية والهوية والدولة الوطنية والأهم من ذلك كيفية التعامل مع التراث والماضي. من هذا المنظور حاولت هذه الدراسة التعريف بلاهوت التحرير وتقديم أهم التيارات وشرح المقولات والنظريات الأساسية ضمن لاهوت التحرير.
