يشتبك الدين مع السياسة في المجتمعات الإسلامية، ويتصاعد الصراع حول دور الدين في الدولة والسياسة، ونجد من يرفع شعار "الإسلام دين ودولة" وبالتالي يرى استحالة فصل الدين عن السياسة، بل يذهب البعض إلى حد تكفير من يدعو لهذا الفصل، ويجادل آخرون بأن المقصود بالحكم هو الاحتكار أو القضاء وليس السلطة السياسية وحكم الدولة، ولذلك، يطالب آخرون بفصل الدين عن السياسة رافعين شعار "لا قداسة في السياسة" ومحذرين من تاريخ الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، قاد هذا النقاش، بالضرورة، إلى تحديد موقف الإسلام والمسلمين من النظام الديمقراطي.
