الكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ تجمع بين الدراسة التراثية والدراسة المعاصرة، وتوزعت فصوله على دراسة صرفية صوتية، أو صوتية محض، أو بيان لجهد قديم في ضوء الدرس الصوتي الحديث. ذلك إن من مسلمات الدرس الصرفي القديم ما عاد انكاره من مسلمات الدرس الصوتي الحديث كالقول بوجود حركة قبل حرف المد من جنسه، وفي ضوء ذلك اختلف التوجيه لعدد من الظواهر اللغوية بين ما عند القدماء وما عند المعاصرين، ومثل هذا يقال عن أثر وحدة الرسم للصائت ونصف الصائت كوحدة رسم الواو في نقول والواو في لون مما أدى إلى اختلاف التوجيه في ظواهر لغوية درسها علماء التصريف العربي ومنها مثلاً ما سموه بالأعلال بالنقل أو بالإسكان حيث رأوا أن صياغة أفعل يفعل من الخوف مثلاً تأتي على أخوف يخوف، ثم نقلت الحركة من المعتل إلى الصحيح قبله وقلب المعتل إلى مجانس للحركة المنقولة فقيل أخاف يخيف، وهي في الدرس الحديث تنحصر في حذف قاعدة المزدوج وإطالة الصوت بالقمة.
