هذا الكتاب عمل علمي يحمل إسم صحابي جليل، هو خالد بن العاص بن هشام إبن المغيرة، يعد أقدم نقش إسلامي صخري يُكشف عنه حتى الآن على مسار طريق الحج السروي المار بسراة غامد في منطقة الباحة، بل يُعد من أقدم النقوش الإسلامية التي نفذها أحد الصحابة الكرام. ولا شك أن لهذا النقش أهميته القصوى في كتابة تاريخ هذه المنطقة، وتاريخ صدر الإسلام بعامة، وكذلك الحكم على النقوش الإخرى التي تحمل أسماء اثنين من أبناء خالد، رضي الله عنه، وهما الحارث وعبد الرحمن، وكذلك اسم حفيده إسماعيل بن عبد الرحمن.
وفي نشر هذه النقوش كشف علمي عن وثائق نادرة سوف يعتمد عليها الدارسون، بإذن الله، في مقارنة وتتبع مسيرة الخط العربي ومراحل تطوره منذ أزمنة تاريخية مبكرة، فهي تقدم شواهد خطية حية لكتبة من وجوه مكة وأعيانها في عصر صدر الإسلام وبني أمية؛ مما يجعلها في مقدمة أفضل الشواهد للخط المكي الذي يعد أول خط عربي كُتب به المصحف الشريف.
كما أن لهذه النقوش أهمية في الإشارة إلى قدم تاريخ منطقة الباحة وحضارتها وازدهارها الذي يعود إلى أوائل القرن الأول الهجري، وعصر بني أمية، بل إلى عصور ما قبل الإسلام، وتثبت بوضوح الصلات القوية بين سراة غامد وزهران ومكة المكرمة، ويؤكد هذا ما نقله العلماء من أن هذه المنطقة كانت عبر تاريخها الطويل وإلى عهد قريب سلة الغذاء لحواضر الحجاز ولا سيما مكة المكرمة.
