إن الإقرار بالمستوى الرفيع لشعر سعيد عقل، لا يعني الإنحناء أمام صولاته وجولاته في النقد والذم والمديح.
لا شك ان عقل عدا عن إبداعه، يعتبر مثقفاً من الدرجة الأولى، لكنه يوظف معرفته لجمع الأضداد وتفريق المتوافقين، والتقليل من قيمة السلف والتعالي على مَنْ عاصرهم، وتجاهل من أتوا من بعده.
على الرغم من الصفات الحسنة التي يسعى لإلصاقها بشخصه، إلا أنه وقع في الكثير من المطبات عبر تاريخه، فأنكر ما كتب بخطه (نشيد "سوريا فوق الجميع" مثلاً) وقيل بصورته وصوته (تأييده لغزو لبنان من قبل الإسرائيلي ودعوته لتطهير لبنان من الفلسطيني).
كثيرة هي أخطاء سعيد عقل، وجمّة هي زلات لسانه، لكن النقاد كما الجمهور، تعوّدوا أن يتعاملوا مع تلك "الهفوات" النرجسية، بشيء من الطرافة واللامبالاة.
إن سيرة سعيد عقل، موسومة بالإبداع بقدر ما هي مرصّعة بالأنا الخالصة الصافية، وما كتابنا هذا سوى محاولة لسبر أغوار تلك الأنا المعظّمة حتى الثمالة، دون أن نهمل بعضاً من عطائه الإبداعي.
