مؤلف هذا الشرح علم من أعلام اللغة المبرزين، ممن حازوا شهرة فائقة في اللغة والأدب والنحو، وهو القاضي الحسين بن أحمد الزوزني، قال فيه عبد الغافر الفارسي في تأريخ نيسابور: كان إمام عصره في النحو واللغة والعربية.
مات سنة ست وثمانين وأربع مئة، وممن ذكره السيوطي في البغية ونسبته إلى "زوزن" بفتح أولها وضمه، والفتح أشهر، كما يستفاد من معجم البلدان لياقوت، وهي كورة واسعة بين نيسابور وهراة، كانت تعرف (بالبصرة الصغرى) لكثرة من أخرجت من الفضلاء والأدباء والعلماء.
وشرح الزوزني على المعلقات السبع، وإن كان من الشروح المختصرة، كما قال مؤلفه، يمتاز على غيره من الشروح الكثيرة المطوّلة بخصلتين بارزتين: الأولى: خصلة تعليمية، وتظهر في دقته في تحليل ألفاظ الشعر القديم، من حيث اللغة والنحو جميعاً، وتقريب الغامض منهما إلى الأذهان، بالأشباه والنظائر الكثيرة المشهورة، حتى يتضح المراد أتم وضوح، مع الدقة والإقتصاد في التعبير، والبراءة من الحشو التكرير.
وهذه إحدى خصائص الأسلوب التعليمي، ومن أهم ما يحتاج إليه الشداة، من طالبي الثقافة اللغوية.
والثانية: خصلة فنية أدبية، وهي ظاهرة في قوّة تحليله المعاني، وردّ الغامض منها إلى عناصره الأولى، فلا يترك معنى شعرياً غامضاً حتى يلح عليه تفتيشاً وتخريجاً على طرائف العرب، وما توورث في بينتهم وأدبهم القديم، من معان أدبية، وتقاليد فنية شعرية، هذا مع قرب المأخذ، وسهولة العبارة، والحرص البالغ على وضوح العلاقة بين اللفظ والمعنى.
ولقد حملتنا هاتين الخصلتين اللتين تميز بهما شرح الزوزني على المعلقات السبع، على الإعتناء بنشر طبعة جديدة منقحة جيّدة التصحيح، جميلة الرونق، مقابلة بمنتهى الدقة وأصول التحقيق على النسختين المخطوطتين من شرح الزوزني المحفوظتين بدار الكتب المصرية تحت الرقمين (47م) و (1736 أدب).
