تعتبر رواية الزوج الأبدي رواية النضج لدوستويفسكي، إذ كتبها وهو في سن الخمسين تقريباً، إنها قصة مدهشة وممتعة تتحدث عن مواجهة بين فيلتشانينوف، الرجل الجذاب، وبافيل بافيلوفيتش، زوج عشيقة فيلتشانينوف السابقة.
يدخل بافيل بافيلوفيتش عالم فيلتشانيتوف ويخبره أن زوجته ماتت منذ تسع سنوات. الزوجة ماتت، لكن الزوج لا يستطيع أن يتخلص من الإفتتان الذي يشعر به حيال حبيب زوجته السابقة، إفتتان لا يمنعه من أن يلعب معه لعبة القط والفأر، فيخبره عن وجود إبنة ولدت بعد فترة قصيرة من رحيله، وسرعان ما نفهم أن هذه الإبنة هي من صلبه.
من هذه المواجهة بين الرجلين تولد حبكة من العلاقات الغربية والمؤثرة، إذ يستند جزء كبير من الرواية إلى هذا التوتر بين العشيق السابق والزوج الأرمل: هل كان الزوج المخدوع على علم بالعلاقة؟ وما الذي يرسمه بالضبط؟ وليزا إبنة من منهما؟
في هذه الرواية المبنية على علاقات الحب والكراهية المتناقضة، تجد بعض الثيمات المحببة لدى دوستويفسكي، كالخلاص والنفاق الإجتماعي وتصوير الأخلاق الإجتماعية الروسية في تلك الحقبة، كما نجد فيها أيضاً هذه الشخصيات الشغوفة التي تضفي على روايات دوستويفسكي جاذبية خاصة.
