Contemporain de l’Égyptien Tahtawi, Boustani fut comme lui un précurseur de la Nahda de la fin du XIXe siècle. En 1840, il s’installe à Beyrouth où il se convertit au protestantisme.
Il collabore avec les missionnaires américains à la traduction de la Bible en arabe, avant d’entreprendre ses propres projets: création d’une école nationale, publication de journaux et édition d’un dictionnaire et d’une encyclopédie.
Dans ses écrits il prône l’amour de la patrie, la séparation entre religion et politique, l’ouverture aux sciences modernes grâce à la traduction et au renouveau de la langue arabe.
