العلوم وإن تنوعت فأفصلها علم دين الله تعالى وشرائعه، فإن به حفظ الإيمان والإسلام اللذين هما من أجل ودائعه، وأفضلها على الإطلاق ورئيسها باتفاق علم العقائد الدينية، الذي هو "أساس الشرائع والأحكام، ومقياس قواعد عقائد الإسلام". كيف لا وموضوعه أجل الموضوعات وهو ذات الله تعالى التي تقدست عن مماثلة الذوات، وصفاته تعالى التي تنزهت عن مشابهة الصفات.
وقد صنف فيه علماء الإسلام في جميع الأزمان من الكتب المطولات والمختصرات، سيما أهل السنة الأشعرية الذين بلغوا في توضيح العقائد أقصى الغايات، وبالغوا في تحرير المقاصد وتقرير القواعد وبيان أوجه الدلالات، فتنوعت مناهجهم في التأليف في العقائد حتى شملت جميع المستويات.
ومن تلك المختصرات التي ضبطت قواعد العقائد الإسلامية، وأرشدت إلى معالم الأصول الدينية، متن "العقيدة البرهانية" للإمام أبي عمرو عثمان السلالجي، فقد لقيت من القبول بين علماء أهل السنة ما جعل أصولها تشرح في سائر الأقطار الإسلامية المغربية والمشرقية، وتمثل بحق وحدة المعتقدات الدينية عند جمهور الفقهاء والمفسرين والأصوليين والمحدثين وغيرهم من أصحاب المذاهب السنية، ومن تلك الشروح التعليق اللطيف الذي وضعه الإمام القاضي أبو عثمان سعيد العقبانين فدق حاول فيه تقريب مباحث البرهانية للمبتدئين من طلبة العلوم الشرعية، واقتصر على ذكر أصول الاستدلالات على العقائد الدينية الإسلامية، حتى إنه لم يشرح بعض الفصول المتعلقة بالإمامة والتوبة وغيرها مما لم يعتبره -في هذا الكتاب- من الأصول العقدية.
