هذه المجموعة "عالم الأشكال"، التي أرادها اندره مالرو، تعتبر أروع عمل خاص بتاريخ الفن العالمي، وقد ضمّت، في عشرين مجلداً، تاريخ روائع الحضارات الكبرى العالمية ابتداء من عصور ما قبل التاريخ حتى سقوط الإمبراطورية الرومانية.
إن ظهور مؤلف "الفينيقيون" في مجموعة "عالم الأشكال" شكّل منعطفاً هامّاً بالإعتراف بوجود فن فينيقي قائم بذاته، حتى تاريخه، كان يُشك بهذا الوجود، وكان يُعتقد أن الفينيقيين، وهُم بحّارة ماهرون وتجّار دهاة، من الصنّاع والحرفيين وليس من الفنانيين الخلّاقين، فجاء هذا الكتاب ليصحح هذه المعتقدات، فاعترف بمهارتهم وفنهم.
إن الفن الفنيقي هو فن خلق الأشكال وإبتكار القطع المتوسطة والصغيرة من الخزف والمعدن والعاج المتأثر بالتراث الفرعوني وتراث بلاد ما بين النهرين، فأعاد الفنان الفينيقي صنعه بترتيب فني خاص به، وقد تمحور هذا الفن حول هذه الصوّر والأشكال المبتكرة من جديد فانتشرت في البحر المتوسط من بلاد ما بين النهرين حتى الأطلسي والأناضول ومصر.
هذا النص عن الحضارة الفينيقية هو من تأليف اندره بارو وموريس شهاب وساتينو موسكاتي، زُيّن بصوّر ورسوم معظمها بالألوان، وقد مهدنا له بمقدمة بقلم فرنسواز بريكال شانونيه، وهي مديرة أبحاث في المجلس الوطني للبحوث العلمية وذيّلته بلائحة من المراجع الحديثة.
