كانت الصحافة فيما مضى هي الوسيلة الوحيدة التي تنقل الأحداث للمواطنين التي تحري في محاطهم وفي العالم ومتابعتها والتعليق عليها، ثم تطورت وأصبحت تطرق أبوابا مختلفة مثل الفن والرياضة والاقتصاد والتسلية؛ بل جميع ما يهم الإنسان، وكانت قبل إنتشار المذياع وإكتشاف التلفاز هي المصدر الوحيد للأخبار، وكان لها مكانٌ مرموقٌ في المجتمع فكانت تسمى أحياناً بــ (صاحبة الجلالة) وحيناً بــ (السلطة الرابعة).
بدأت الصحافة في مكة المكرمة في وقت مبكر منذ دخلت المطابع أيام الحكم العثماني عام 1300هـ حيث صدرت أول جريدة (حجاز) عام 1326هـ.
وأصدر بعض أبناء هذا الوطن خارج الجزيرة العربية من المغامرين صحفاً تنطق بإسم البلاد وتنقل أخبارها وتبشر بما وصلت إليه.
وبعد مرور أكثر من نصف قرن، يحسن بنا أن نذكر هؤلاء الروّاد ونشكرهم على ما قدموه رغم شح الإمكانات في هذا الكتاب متضمّناً تعريفاً مختصراً بالإصدار وترجمة للرائد مع إضافة ما يتيسر من صور شخصية أو صور لأغلفة الإصدارات وبعض الوثائق المهمة.
