أليكسي مكسيموفيتش بيشكوف، ويعرف بمكسيم غوركي (28 مارس 1868 - 18 يونيو 1936)، أديب وناشط سياسي ماركسي روسي، مؤسس مدرسة الواقعية الاشتراكية التي تجسد النظرة الماركسية للأدب حيث يرى أن الأدب مبني على النشاط الاقتصادي في نشأته ونموه وتطوره، وأنه يؤثر في المجتمع بقوته الخاصة، لذلك ينبغي توظيفه في خدمة المجتمع.
ولد في نجني نوفجراد عام 1868، وأصبح يتيم الأب والأم وهو في التاسعة من عمره، فتولت جدته تربيته، وكان لهذه الجدة أسلوب قصصي ممتاز، مما صقل مواهبه القصصية.
وبعد وفاة جدته تأثر لذلك تأثرأ كبيراً مما جعله يحاول الانتحار.
تعنى كلمة جوركى باللغة الروسية "المر" وقد اختارها الكاتب لقبا مستعارا له من واقع المرارة التي كان يعانى منها الشعب الروسى تحت الحكم القيصرى والتي شاهدها بعينه خلال المسيرة الطويلة التي قطعها بحثا عن القوت ، وقد انعكس هذا الواقع المرير يشكل واضح على كتاباته وبشكل خاص في رائعته "الأم".
أهم أعماله: - رواية الأم.
- رواية الطفولة.
- مسرحية الحضيض.
- قصيدة "انشودة نذير العاصفة".
- الطفولة 1913-1914 - الأعداء؛دراما؛1906 - جامعاتي 1923 بالإضافة للعديد من المسرحيات والقصص والمقالات.

يرتحلُ بنا الأديب الروسي مكسيم غوركي إلى مطلع القرن العشرين ليحكي لنا قصة طفلٍ عاش يتيماً متنقلًا من مسكنٍ لآخر ومن عملٍ لآخر، يعيش بعيدًا عن أسرته التي لم يتبقَ منها سوى عمه، فيكابد معاناة ألمِ اليُتمِ والغربةِ وجشع الناس، يكبرُ هذا الطفل فيجدُ نفسه جاسوسًا في حكومة القيصر الذي يُوشكُ أن يفقد ملكه إثر تفشِّي الإحتجاجات في البلاد، شهدت تلك الفترةُ انتشار الجواسيس في كلِّ البلاد فأصبح بطل القصة جزءًا من هذه المنظومة، يعيش هذا الجاسوس دوامةً من المشاعر المختلطة التي تتصارع بداخله غير مدركٍ لما يفعله، يعيش حياةً من العدمية والفراغ تجعلُ من "وجوده كعدمه"، فيقرر في نهاية القصة اتخاذ قراره الحاسم بالخروج من هذه الدوامة.كتب غوركي رواية "الجاسوس" إبان الفوضى التي انتشرت في إمبراطورية القيصر مطلع القرن العشرين ومطالبات الشعب بالإصلاحات. يُعد غوركي مؤسسًا للمدرسة الواقعيّة الإشتراكيّة التي تجسد النظرة الماركسيّة للأدب. رُشح الكاتب خمس مرات للحصول على جائزة نوبل في الآداب، وقد عُرف بكتاباته المناهضة للقيصر دخل على إثرها السجن مرات عدة.
