إن من الكتب الفقية التى اشتهرت وذاع صيتها، عند العلماء، واعتمدها الفقهاء فى مؤلفاتهم وكتبهم العلمية، كتاب الحدود، لفقيه عصره وفريد زمانه، الفقيه العلامة الإمام أبي عبد الله محمد بن عرفة التونسيى المتوفر سنة803 هـ.
وهو كتاب يعنى بتعاريف الأبواب الفقهية تعريفاً دقيقاً جامعاً مانعاً، يميز الباب عن غيره من بقية الأبواب الأخرى، بما يعيطه له المؤلف من حد، ويضعه له من تعريف، ويرسمه من خاصة، وقد جاء كتابه هذا في أسلوب مطبوع بالدقة والعمق فى التعريف للباب، واختصار الألفاظ وضغطها، مما جعله متسماً بشئ من الصعوبة فى التعبير وفهم اللفظ وإدراك المعنى، وهو أسلوب كان سائداً فى عصر المؤلف وأمثاله من العلماء المتمكنين، ومع ذلك فإن جل الفقهاء فى كتبهم الفقية وشروحهم لها يوردن تعريف ابن عرفة لكل باب. وما يدل عليه منطوقه، وما يخرج بمفهومه من ابواب أخرى. وقد أدرك الفقيه العلامة قاض الجماعة أبو عبد الله محمد الأنصاري التونسى المشهور بالرصاع، المتوفى سنة 894هـ هذه الصعوبة الكامنة فى الفاظ حدود ابن عرفة وتعاريفه الفقهية، واستشعر الحاجة إلى وضع شرح عليها، يوضح ما أشكل من ألفاظها، ويجلى ماغمض من دلالتها، وييسر ما استعصى على الفهم من مقاصدها ومبانيها، ومعانيها ومفاهيمها، ويضيف إليه معلومات فقهية أخرى تزيد تلك التعاريف بياناً ووضوحاً، فحركته همته العالية، وأنضته مكانته العلمية، ودفعه حبه وتقديره لشيخه ابن عرفه إلى أن يضع شرحا جليلاً على كتابه الحدود، يحقق به تلك الغاية النبيلة، ويبلغ به الهدف المحمود.
