إن الطبعة الثامنة من كتاب "المرجع في الإنتاج التلفزيوني" قد تعرض إلى تنقيح مكثف، أن السبب وراء هذا التغيير الجذري يعود إلى التحول الدراماتيكي من المعدات المتناظرة الخطية إلى الرقمية (الديجتال) والتي كان لها تأثير جذري على آليات (تقنيات) الإنتاج.
إن التكنولوجيا الرقمية تغلغلت لتغير ليس فقط العناصر الرئيسية مثل التلفزيون والكاميرا ومسيطر تعتيم الضوء وألواح مفاتيح الصوت ومسجلات الفيديوتيب وآلات المونتاج ومختلف معدات إستخراج الخطوط والصور الجرافيكية، ولكن أيضاً ما تلاها من معدات "غير إلكترونية" مثل عدسات الكاميرات وحاملات كاميرات الأستوديو، لقد كان للمعدات الرقمية تأثير أيضاً وفي بعض الأحيان غيرت جذرياً آليات ما قبل الإنتاج والإنتاج وخاصة ما بعد الإنتاج.
إضافة لذلك فإن التلفزيونات عالية الوضوح لم تعد محددة فقط لإستخدام مختبرات عمالقة الإنتاج الإلكتروني، لا بل إنها الآن تستخدم في المحطات التلفزيونية وشركات الإنتاج المستقلة.
فالتلفزيونيات عالية الوضوح قد تصبح الوسيط القادم للإنتاج السينمائي وللتوزيع وكذلك للعروض المسرحية، ولعكس هذه الإتجاهات ولتهيئة الطالب للتحديات المهنية التي تواجهه اليوم وغدا، فقد قمت خلال هذا الكتاب بإدخال التغيير إلى المعدات عالية الوضوح والرقمية، وبنفس الوقت، فإنني لم أشا أن أتنازل عن النقاش حول المعدات المتناظرة الخطية التقليدية، والتي لا شك منها في أنها ستبقى صالحة للإستخدام لوقت طويل قادم.
