علم الأصول هو من أشرف العلوم وأنفعها حيث يُتعرف من خلالها إلى طرق استنباط الأحكام العملية من أدلتها التفصيلية، فمن ألم به يكون ملماً لمداخل الأحكام الفقهية المستنبطة من النصوص الإجمالية. وكتاب مراقي السعود هو من المؤلفات القيمة التي تبحث في علم أصول الفقه المالكي وذلك لما يتضمنه من غزارة المعلومات الموضوعة فيه، وقد رأى الشنقيطي وجوب شرح هذه الأرجوزة، فكان هذا الكتاب الذي شرح من خلاله "نشر البنود على مراقي السعود" فقسمه إلى جزئين: تناول في الجزء الأول تعريف أصول الفقه، والآداة التي يجب استعمالها للتمكن من التوصل إلى القواعد الكلية لأصول الفقه ألا وهي (اللغة) فتناول الحديث عن المشترك في الألفاظ، والمجاز، والمعري وإلى ما هنالك من أدوات لفظية يخترق من خلالها النصوص المجملة، ومن ثم عمد شرح المفاهيم التالية: العام، الخاص، المقيد، المطلق، والتأويل في المحكم، والمجمل. أما الجزء الثاني والأخير فقد تناول فيه الأدلة الشرعية كالسنة والإجماع، القياس وما يتفرع عنها من ملحقات.
