إن كتاب «تاريخ الصوفية» من أهم كتب القوم، ألفه أبو عبد الرحمن قبل أن يؤلف كتابه: «طبقات الصوفية».
وقد غدا الكتاب المعوّل عليه الأول، والمنهل الأفضل لكلِّ من كتب في التاريخ أو الطبقات، وكثيرًا ما ينقل عنه الخطيب البغدادي في «تاريخ بغداد»، وابن عساكر في «تاريخ مدينة دمشق»، وعبد الكريم الرافعي في «التدوين في أخبار قزوين»، والذهبي في «تاريخ الإسلام»، وغيرهم كثير.
والكتاب - على أهميته وتفرّده - فُقِدَ منذ قرون، وعلى ما انتهى إليه بحثي، وأطمئن إليه: إن آخر من نقل عنه مباشرة الإمام شمس الدين السخاوي (توفي سنة 903هـ) في كتابه: «طبقات الأولياء المكرمين». والذي يؤيد ما ذهبت إليه؛ أن مصطفى بن عبد الله كاتب جلبي المشهور بحاجي خليفة صاحب «كشف الظنون عن أسامي الكتب والفنون» المتوفى سنة (1067هـ) لم يذكره في كتابه. ولم أجد بعد هذا التاريخ من نقل منه بالوجادة مباشرة.
ولعلّ الله يمنُّ على هذه الأمة، ويخرج هذا الكتاب إلى النور من زاوية مكتبة منسية، أو من يد ضنين به، أغراه بخلُه وغيه عن إفادة أمّةٍ، وإسعاف جمهور.
إنه كتاب «تاريخ الصوفية» الذي جمع فيه مؤلفُه حكايات الصوفية وأشعارَهم.
