يقول المؤلف بنسون لي جريسون الموظف بوزارة الخارجية الأمريكية بأنه من المؤسف أن السعودية كانت في الأغلب الأعم في فترة العلاقات الثنائية بين البلدين، ذات أهمية ضئيلة بالنسبة للولايات المتحدة، وكان عدد ضئيل من الأفراد فقط هم الذين يقررون السياسة الأميركية اتجاهها، إذا ما كانت هناك أي سياسة بالفعل، بينما الجمهور العريض لا يحيط إلا بالنذر اليسير من المعرفة بها والمشاركة فيها. في حين أن هذا الموضوع له من الأهمية بالنسبة لهذا البلد بحيث يجب لتاريخ علاقات الولايات المتحدة مع السعودية أن يكون مألوفاً لكل الأمريكيين المهتمين بالشئون الخارجية.
وفضلاً عن ذلك فاته يتعين على المسؤولين بالحكومة الأمريكية، المنوط بهم رسم السياسة الأمريكية إزاء السعودية، أن يمتلكوا معرفة مفصلة بالتطورات التي وقعت في الماضي بين البلدين وليست المشكلة فقط، في هذا الصدد، أن السعوديين المسؤولين عن هذه الشؤون يكنون لتاريخ العلاقات الثنائية الأمريكية السعودية تقديراً أكبر من نظرائهم الأمريكيين، وإنما أيضاً على عكس اتجاه الولايات المتحدة إلى التركيز على أحداث الساعة، نجد أن السعوديين يميلون إلى النظر إلى التطورات الجارية في ارتباطها بتطورات الماضي وبالمستقبل على المدى البعيد. لذلك كرس المؤلف هذا الكتاب لهدف المساعدة على تعويض نقص المعرفة في الولايات المتحدة بما في العلاقات مع السعودية.
