يتناول الكتاب دراسة مدينة برشلونة دراسة اجتماعية وتاريخية, تقع هذه المدينة في حوض منخفض تحيط به جبال السلسلة الساحلية التي تمتد قليلاً نحو الداخل، بين (ملغرات) و(غراف)، مشكلة بذلك نوعاً من المدرجات. والمناخ فيها هادىء ولطيف، لا تعتريه هزات وتغيرات ملحوظة: السماء تظل عادة صافية ونيرة، والغيوم القليلة والنادرة الوجود، التي تحجبها أحياناً تكون بيضاء، والضغط الجوي فيها يظل مستقراً، وأمطارها وهي قليلة عادة، ولكنها، في بعض الأحيان تنهمر بشكل مفاجىء كالسيل الدافق. ينسب للفينيقيين إنشاء هذه المدينة للمرة الأولى، والثاني مرة أيضاً. وهي تدخل التاريخ كمستعمرة لقرطاجة، حليفة صيدا، وصور، ومن الثابت أن فيلة (هانيبال)، وهي في طريقها الى جبال الألب، حيث سيقضي البرد في تلك المرتفعات على الكثير منها، كانت قد توقفت لتروي ظمأها وترتاح, على ضفاف نهري: (بيزوس) و(لؤبريغات). وقد استولت الدهشة الشديدة على سكان (برشلونة) الأوائل، عند رؤيتهم تلك الحيوانات، وأخذوا يتبادلون الأسئلة فيما بينهم، وقد شملت الدهشة الجميع. ومن التعليقات التي تلت ذلك فيما بعد، وانتشرت، خلال سنين عديدة، بين السكان، نشأن هوية برشلونة، كنواة لإحدى المدن، كان عليها بعد ذلك أن تضيع، وأن يلاقي سكان المدينة في القرن التاسع عشر مشقة كبيرة في استعادتها.
