هذا الكتاب يناقش قضية مهمة تتعلق بموضوع الساعة فى الثقافة الغربية عموما، وتتصل بمشكلة علاقة العالم المسلم بالغرب الأوربى والأمريكى بصفة عامة. ويكشف الكتاب عن سعة علم المؤلف بالموضوعات الكثيرة التى ناقشها الكتاب عبر مسافة زمنية هائلة تمتد من العصور الوسطى حتى الوقت الراهن. ومن ناحية أخرى، جمع المؤلف بين القراءة فى النصوص، والرحلة، والمشاهدة ، ولذلك تنوعت مصادره واكتسبت حيوية أضفت على صفحات الكتاب جاذبية لا تقاوم، كما أن لغته تتميز بالرقة الأدبية والقدرة «التصويرية» . لقد ناقش الكتاب مشكلة «الآخر» من خلال أربعة عشر فصلاً ، وبدأ من معركة انتصر فيها أسطول الغرب مجتمعًا على الأسطول العثمانى فى ليبانتو سنة 1517م وهو ما يكشف عن أمرين غاية فى الأهمية بالنسبة للمنهج الذى اتبعه المؤلف فى هذا الكتاب الذى يتناول تاريخ الصراع بين عالم الإسلام وعالم المسيحية: أولهما : أن المؤلف لم يحبس نفسه فى إطار التتابع الزمنى الكرونولوچى ، وإنما اختار أن يتناول موضوعات متنوعة، وإن كانت غير متفرقة ، داخل الإطار العام لموضوعه. وثانيهما : أنه اختار نقاط مناقشة موضوعه على أسس تاريخية وجغرافية فى آن معًا. الكتاب غاية فى الأهمية والقيمة
