في كتابه هذا، يستعرض الأستاذ عارف أحمد عبد الغني "تاريخ أمراء مكة المكرمة" للفترة (1-1344هـ) عبر إعطاء صورة شاملة عن المدينة المقدسة تبدأ بالتعريف بالمدينة (مكة) وأسماؤها كما وردت عند اللغويين وعند علماء الدين بالإستناد إلى "القرآن الكريم" والحديث الشريف، ثم التعريف بجغرافية البلد الحرام، وتاريخه منذ عصر سيدنا إبراهيم الخليل عليه السلام حتى فتح مكة، ثم ذكر تراجم الأمراء حسب التسلسل الزمني لهم حتى استلام آخر الأشراف الحسينيين في نهاية الربع الأول من القرن العشرين على يد قوات الملك عبد العزيز آل سعود في جدة سنة 1347ه - 927م.
من الجدير بالذكر أن اختيار مؤلف الكتاب هؤلاء الأمراء ممن عاش في عهد الخلافة الراشدية هم ممن كانوا من حفظة القرآن الكريم وفقهاء الدين، ومن الذين يتصفون بالصفات المحمودة من تُقى وحسن خلق وعلم بالحديث، هو من شروط المعرفة العلمية الرصيفة التي امتلكها المؤلف في البحث التاريخي، وقد أضاف إلى هذه الشروط، في الإختيار شرط صفة الولاء، والتأييد للخليفة في خلافة عثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنه، ومن تلاه من الخلفاء، حيث يذكر المؤلف فترات تاريخية كان الإستيلاء على مكة فيها بقوة السلاح وفرض الأمر الواقع، بالإضافة إلى الحكم الوراثي حتى أنه كان يحكم مكة عدة أمراء في وقت واحد وحكم بعضهم ساعات، كما يذكر أن إمارة مكة ظلت تتبع في معظم الحقب التاريخية إلى عواصم ثلاث دمشق في عهد الأمويين وبغداد في عهد العباسيين، ثم انتقلت فيما بعد إلى القاهرة، وفي حالات طارئة كانت تتبع اليمن، وفي القرون الأخيرة صار أمر تعيين أمير مكة بأمر سلطان عثماني ... إلى قائمة أمراء مكة عشرات من الأمراء الجدد الذين لا ذكر لهم في الكتب المؤلفة حول مكة وزاردت إلى أخبارهم أخبار جديدة، مع إضافة عدد من الملاحق التي تخدم الغرض من الكتاب.
