يتناول هذا المؤلف التعليم المستمر أو تعليم الكبار بمعناه الشامل, بأعتباره علماً له أسسه النظرية, من خلال توضيح مفهومه وفلسفته, وأيضاً مدي إستناد موضوعاته إلي قاعدة من المعارف العلمية في مجالات تخصصية أساسية مثل علم الفلسفة وعلم الإجتماع وعلم النفس بفروعه المختلفة. وقد تم عرض الكتاب في خمسة فصول؛ تناول الفصل الأول مفهوم وفلسفة التعليم المستمر, معتمداً في ذلك علي ثلاثة مداخل مختلفة لتعريف تعليم الكبار وهي التعريف بواسطة التصنيف, والتعريف بواسطة تحليل الهيكل أو البناء, والتعريف بواسطة تحليل العمليات. ونظراً لأن أنشطة وبرامج التعليم المستمر توجه أساساً إلي فئة الكبار, فقد تناول الفصل الثاني الشخص الكبير كفرد وكدارس من خلال عرض وجهات نظر فلسفية ومعتقدات أساسية عن الكائنات الإنسانية, ومناقشة فكرة تطوير مراحل الحياة, وأيضاً من خلال النظر إلي التغيرات البيولوجية والنفسية التي تحدث للكبار والمؤثرة علي التعلم والأداء. وإستناداً إلي ما تم عرضه في الفصلين الأول والثاني عن مفهوم التعليم المستمر وطبيعة الشخص الكبير كفرد وكدارس وأيضاً في ضوء مفهوم وأبعاد التنمية البشرية, وجهنا إهتمامنا في الفصل الثالث نحو بلورة السبل الممكنة للتعليم المستمر في تحقيق التنمية البشرية, سواء علي مستوي الفرد أو المجتمع. أما الفصلان الرابع والخامس فقد تناولا موضوعي تخطيط وتقييم برامج التعليم المستمر, آخذين في الإعتبار توضيح المفاهيم الأساسية والأطر النظرية التي يصلح الإستفادة منها في إطار أنواع متباينة من تلك البرامج.
هذا فضلاً عن الأهتمام بتوضيح دور تكنولوجيا المعلومات والإتصال في تخطيط وتقييم برامج التعليم المستمر.
كما حرصنا أيضاً أن يتناول هذا المؤلف التعليم المستمر بإعتباره مجالاً للدراسة والممارسة, من خلال طرح أمثلة واقعية ودراسات ميدانية.
