تناول علماء العربية القدامى علم الصرف، وعرّفوه إلا أنهم لم يوضحوا معناه توضيحاً كافياً، ولم يقسّموه على منوال ما قام به المحدثون من تقسيمه إلى عملي ونظري وإن قام بعضهم بوضع مؤلفات خاصة بالصرف بعد ان كان مبثوثاً في المؤلفات التي ألفت في النحو العربي مثل "أبو عثمان المازني" فقد جاء بعد سيبويه وجمع معظم بحوث الصرف في كتابه "التصريف"، و"ابن جنى" الذي ألف كتابه "شرح تصريف المازني"، و"ابن الحاجب" الذي ألف "شرح الشافية في الصرف، وشرحها للرضي".
أما هذا المخطوط فهو شرح العلامة "سعد الدين التفتازاني" على تصريف العزي للزنجاني، فقد تميّز بإنفراده في تناول مادة الصرف، وتوضيح معناه اللغوي والإصطلاحي بأسلوب جيد رصين، فهو يُعَدُّ من أهم كتب الصرف التعليمية، لطلاب قسم اللغة العربية وآدابها بالجامعات والمعاهد العليا والمنارات الشرعية والمدارس الدينية، وطلاب الدراسات العليا.
ولأهمية هذا المخطوط اعتنى الدكتور "إبراهيم زبيدة" تحقيقه حتى يكون في متناول القراء، وفق قواعد التحقيق المتعارف عليها، إذ كان عمله في تحقيقه على النحو الآتي: وضع العنوانات للموضوعات بين معكوفين، خرج الآيات القرآنية، ووضع في الهامش اسم السورة ورقم الآية، خرج الشواهد الشعرية، وذكر محل الشاهد في البيت وقائله إن وجد ومعناه اللغوي، ومظانها التي وردت فيها، مع تصويب ما وجد فيه من تصحيف، شرح الكلمات التي تحتاج إلى شرح في الهامش، ذيل النص المحقق بمراجع البحث، وضع متن تصريف العزي بين قوسين.
هذا المخطوط قد تضمن كل موضوعات التصريف بأسلوب ميّسر ابتعد فيها صاحب المتن وكذلك الشارح عن الغموض، وقد اعتمد المحقق النسخة المطبوعة طباعة قديمة أصل لهذا الكتاب المحقق، وذلك لما لاقته من عناية.
