هذا الكتاب دراسة جادة وعميقة للإسهام الثقافى والفكرة الذى قدمته شخصيتان شهيرتان، هما أحمد أمين وابنه حسين. وربما يكون السبب الاكبر وراء شهرة أحمد امين سلسلة كتبه عن تاريخ الفكر الإسلامى التي بدأها بكتابه "فجر الإسلام" (1928م) الذى ترجم إلى الفارسية والأوردية ومعظم اللغات الاوروبية الرئيسة، وكتابه "حياتى" الذى يعرض سيرته الذاتية, كما قام احمد امين أيضاً بكتابة عدة مئات من المقالات الطويلة والقصيرة حتى يتمكن من التواصل مع قطاع أوسع من جماهير القراء. وقد سار ابنه حسين- الذي ولد عام 1932- على خطى أبيه؛ فاستخدام المقالات في طرح وجهات نظره حول مجموعة من الموضوعات المتصلة بالدين والتاريخ والسياسة والثقافة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، والتي تغيرت بصورة جذرية منذ زمن والده. ويمكن وصف كلا الرجلين بأنهما "ليبراليان" بالمعنى الذى عبر عنه البرت حوراني في كتابه "الفكر العربي في العصر الليبرالى". ونظراً لأن مسالة الدور "اللائق" بالإسلام في الدولة الحديثة هي المحور الرئيس لكتابات كل من أحمد وحسين أمين، فإن دراسة الدكتور ميزوتانى تكتسب أهمية خاصة في لحظة تاريخية فارقة تمت فيها الإطاحة بنظم ديكتاتورية "علمانية" راسخة ووصلت أحزاب إسلامية إلى سدة الحكم عن طريق صناديق الانتخاب."
