يكثر الحديث في العالم العربي اليوم عن الليبرالية العربية، والأحزاب والرموز الفكرية والثقافية الليبرالية، أو في المجمل عن التيار الليبرالي العربي، وهناك مواقف متباينة في دنيا العرب من الفكرة الليبرالية تتراوح بين القبول المطلق والرفض المطلق، ونجد تخندقاً مع الفكرة أو ضدها، لكن جهوداً فكرية ناضجة وهادئة، ومكتملة لم تظهر حتى الآن، عسى أن تبلور موقفاً واقعياً من الفكر الليبرالي بعيداً عن النظر له في السياقات التاريخية لمسيرة الفكر السياسية والإجتماعي في الغرب، مما يعني أن من يقبل الفكر الليبرالي يحاول تقديمه معلباً جاهزاً كما جاء من الغرب مع الإصرار على عدم بذل الجهد الكافي لمحاولة توطينه في البيئة العربية، أما من يرفضونه فهم لا يحاولون أيضاً نقده نقداً موضوعياً، يسمح بالإفادة مما فيه من إيجابيات قد تنفع البيئة العربية.
ولإعادة نشر هذه الدراسة قصة، فهي في الأصل تشكل فصلاً من دراسة أشمل نشرت عام 2004 بعنوان (الفكر الإجتماعي في مصر 1919- 1939).
وقد قام المؤلف بإعادة نشر الفصل الخاص بالتيار الليبرالي تحت عنوان: "جذور الليبرالية العربية (الحالة المصرية)" مساهمة منه في تعريف القارئ العربي بجذور الفكر اليبرالي في الثقافة العربية المعاصرة.
