بعد إكتشاف أمر المنظمة الخاصة من طرف البوليس الفرنسي، تتأسس مخابرات جزائرية بأمر من الزعيم وتحمل عاتقها التحضير للحرب بعيدا عن أعين الفرنسيين وبأساليب أكثر نجاعة، مختارة لهذه المهمة رجالا قد يبدو بعضهم مجرد صعاليك ويبدو بعضهم الآخر حركى أو خونة، غير أنّ بطل الرواية يحي عربي الشريف المدعو بوبلاد ليس صعلوكا ولا حركيا وإنّما هو رجل دون اسم له ولا وجود، لا يعرف عنه الفرنسيون إلّا أنّه رجل ميّت، يتم اختياره لقيادة هذه الحرب لكن ليس دون مخاض.. ولن تكلل الخطة بنجاح إلّا بمساعدة رجلين، الأوّل أحد أكبر تجار النبيذ بمارسيليا"صافا لماغسياز"، والثاني أحد أصدقاء فرنسا الأوفياء" الآغا الشريف بلقاسم"، ليس هناك داع للاستغراب في هذه الحرب ستلعب كلّ الأوراق وليس هناك رجال يخدمون القضية الوطنية أكثر من أولئك الذين يبدون أقل وطنية.. المحرك الوحيد لأبطال الرواية هو التاريخ وما يزرعه في نفوسهم من حقد اتجاه الفرنسين، ابن السهوب المقفرة وسليل آل أودباشي وابن عمّ الناصر بن شهرة تحركهم روح واحدة هي روح التاريخ وترمي بهم إلى غاية واحدة هي بعث بعث فصل خطاب يتلقى فيه الفرنسيون نحاسا بدل الكلام..
